Top 5 Countries Using Solar Energy

Despite several years of economic difficulties, the worldwide solar energy market is booming – and countries all over are beginning to adopt this clean and renewable energy source on a widespread basis.

The US comes out as number five worldwide for solar installation, producing 10% of the world’s solar energy.  As gas prices continue to pose problems for Americans, they’re searching harder and harder for an alternative energy source that can produce enough electricity to power their homes or businesses in spite of weather or location.  They’re also looking for an option that’s affordable, and government programs that offer incentives make this possible.

Over 60% of solar installations in the US are in California.  Due to programs like the California Solar Initiative, or CSI, solar energy San Diego enthusiasts (and regular California residents looking for a new way to power their homes) are able to finance their systems through a number of options and can even receive incentives for choosing solar energy.

Here are the top 5 countries for solar energy adoption based on megawatts of energy in 2010.

5. USA – 2,528 megawatts
4. Italy – 3,494 megawatts
3. Japan – 3,662 megawatts
2. Spain – 3,784 megawatts
1. Germany – 17,193 megawatts
