Tree Service Advice for Helping Your Backyard Cope with Summer Heat

The excessively hot and dry weather of summer doesn’t make for the best environment for your backyard plants.  Heat can severely damage plants, and the low humidity common during heat waves means that more water is likely to evaporate into the air rather than remain in the soil to nourish the flora of your backyard.  High temperatures with low humidity are also often followed by drought, which deprives your plants of water even further.

Extreme weather is never good for plants, but the advice and care of a professional tree service (such as Redmond tree service Certified Arborist Tree Care) can help keep your trees and backyard plants in top shape during high summer temperatures.  A professional arborist might make the following recommendations or employ the following techniques to maintain a summer lawn.
  • Don’t mulch.  Mulch absorbs water.  Removing mulch is also a good way to increase the penetrability of water, but if there’s no rain in the forecast there may not be much point to this.
  • Check trees for signs of dry roots.  Brown or yellow leaves, leaves that are falling, wilting branches, and branches that have died all point to a lack of water available to the roots.  Watering your trees with a size-proportional quantity of water can help restore moisture.
  • Have your tree service check old trees.  Older and very large trees tend to retain water during high temperatures and seal their trunks and roots to hold in moisture.  If the tree is very large or has a significant amount of dry rot, the excess water could make it too heavy to hold its own weight and it could fall.  A certified arborist will be able to examine trees and determine their risk of falling in a heat wave.
  • Don’t move soil around below the tree.  This interferes with its access to water and nutrients, which it needs during the summer.
